Khairpur district is located in the northern part of the Sindh province. It lies between 260 to 11' and 270 to 44' north latitudes and 680 to 12' and 70 to 11' east longitudes. The district is bounded on the north by Shikarpur and Sukkur districts, on the east by India, on the south by Sanghar and Nawabshah districts and on the west by Nawabshah and Larkana districts.
The district Khairpur is divided into two parts the plain cultivated area in the west comprising Khairpur, Gambat, Kot Diji, Mirwah and Faiz ganj talukas where irrigation and influence of the Indus river and its canals extends.
The soils of the district are numerous, each with its different characteristics. The second portion of the district is very extensive and is covered with sand hills. The western boundary ofKhairpur and Gambat taluka is formed by the river and is covered with forests.The climate of Khairpur district is consisted of two well-defmed seasons, the hot and the cold.
The mean maximum and minimum temperature in the hot season is about 42°C and 27°C respectively. The mean
maximum and minimum temperature in the cold season is about 2SoC and 7°C respectively. About 80 percent of the people belong to the agriculture. Their condition on the whole is not very encouraging. Only a few persons have big holdings. The rest are either landless haris or petty khatedars.. The most important crops of Kharif are cotton, oil seed and sugarcane,whereas main crops during Rabi are wheat and gram. Rice, maize, pulses, juwar, chillies, barely etc.
are also grown in the district. The main sources of irrigation in this district are three canals known as East Feeder,
West Feeder,and Nara canal.Khairpur district was very backward in the filed of industry when Pakistan came into being.
Thereafter people started taking interest in installation of the industrial concerns and district made good progress
towards the industrial development. The district is famous for its cottage industry; several hand-looms operate in the town of Khairpur and Gambat.The detail of industrial units in the district is as follow.
The main Pakistan Railway line as well as National Highwayt from Peshawar to Karachi passes through Khairpur
taluka.Buses trucks,taxis,cars, etc. work on large scale on the highway. District headquarters is connected with its
talukas by metalled roads and with the interior by katcha roads.Khairpur district is also equipped with digital and non- digital telecommunication systems besides postage and telegraph.
