Chilas is a semi desert town located in the Northern Areas, Pakistan. Chilas is the mid-way stop between Rawalpindi and Skardu/Hunza It is a as being on the old Silk Road one can see the rock engravings of old traders and pilgrimages passing through here. A jeep road from here crosses the Babusar pass to Kaghan valley the old road to Gilgit before the building of KKH. Nanga Parbat can be seen about 15 km before chilas. Chilas is connected to the Chinese cities of Kashgar and Tashkurgan via Bungi,Gilgit and Sost.
There are more than 20,000 pieces of rock art and petroglyphs all along the Karakoram Highway in Northern Areas of Pakistan that are conentrated at ten major sites between Hunza and Shatial. The carvings were left by various invaders, traders and pilgrims who passed along the trade route, as well as by locals. The earliest date back to between 5000 and 1000 BC, showing single animals, triangular men and hunting sccenes in which the animals are larger than the hunters. These carvings were pecked into the rock with stone tools and are covered with a thick patina that proves their age.
Besham:
200 Kilometers from Chilas, you may see the rockdrawing from 4th to 8th century at Shatial along the bank of river Indus. Besham to Chilas is a beautiful drive.
Chilas to Gilgit is a very scenic drive on Karakorum Highway the road is very pictureque and has a lot to offer.
